Vikings women’s team (The ViQueens) play in Central Coast 7s
Over the October long weekend the Vikings women's team participated in the inaugural Central Coast 7s.
The girls, hopeful of a sunny weekend of 7s and the beach, boarded the bus on an overcast Friday afternoon. By the time we reached the Central Coast it had been pouring for hours.
Saturday morning it was still raining. The Women's draw consisted of 6 teams in 2 pools. The ViQueens defeated a Wallaroo studded Warringah team in the first game (tries: Bec Maher, Kristy Giteau, Pip Butt) and convincingly beat the Lloyd McDermott team in a firey second game (tires: Nikki Ayers, Bec Maher x2 conversions: Nikki Ayers) -setting up a meeting with a very strong Sydney University in the final. A tournament ending injury to Manu Wintergerst meant the girls headed into the final with only two reserves. The final was a hard fought, wet and cold affair with the score being 10 all at half time. Fatigue got the better of the girls toward the end of the second half with Sydney scoring two unanswered tries bringing the final score to 20-10 (tries: Kristy Giteau x 2).
After a long, wet and miserable day the girls headed back to the accommodation for hot showers before heading to the after match function and a big night out. Sunday saw even more rain and a very quiet bus trip home. The team (Pip Butt, Bridget Dowling, Nikki Ayers, Bec Maher, Kristy Giteau, Anna Robson, Manu Wintergerst, Shellie Milward, Carly Hill and Fiona Williams) would like to thank Marty Harris for his bus driving, strapping and organising over the weekend.
